Whatever we do just now at Westminster Youth Ministry, it is impossible to not gaze far into the distance and see, in rather huge letters, the words ‘WORLD YOUTH DAY’. Yes, it’s pretty much the centre piece of 2016 but we’re also involved in many other interesting activities over the next few months.
As we begin to live out the Year of Mercy, we’ll be underpinning much of our work this year on the Jubilee Year, and reflecting the core values inherent in the vision mapped out by the Holy Father.
Here’s a brief summary of what’s we’re planning just now – it’s just the key highlights for the first couple of months and much more information on these events and our wider mission can be found on our website:
January 23 – Catholic Underground
We’ll be hosting the Franciscan Friars for their first CU evening of 2016 – as always from 7.30pm at St Aloysius Church, Euston. This young adults event is a wonderful way to bring some peace and calm into your life.
February 6 – Visual Arts Day
As a part of our on-going Youth Training Programme, and following on from our successful Performing Arts Weekend and our Music Ministry Day, we have been working with Alice and Marie-Louise, two terrific artists, and now invite young people over the age of 14 to join us at our Visual Arts Day. Being hosted in the arts studios in Wapping Parish, this is a wonderful opportunity to explore your artistic talents and get some valuable mentoring and guidance from Alice and Marie-Louise, and consider how faith can be explored through art.
February 25 – WYD Pilgrims Meeting
This is the first opportunity for our Krakow pilgrims to come together, to start to form into a pilgrimage community and also to get the key information ahead of our journey in July. This is also an opportunity for those who’ve not yet made a decision to join us to come along to be better informed and understand more about our plans.
February 27 – Multi-Parish Confirmation Day
Working alongside our good friends the Franciscan Friars, we will be leading 200+ young people from several parishes in a truly blessed day at Maria Fidelis School, Gower Street, Euston. As the building work on our SPEC retreat centre in Pinner moves into overdrive, we have this day (and one more in April) set out to cover the transition until SPEC is at full capability in 2017.
March 12 – Youth Worker Training Day (1/2)
There is a growing community of youth workers across Westminster, who have a blessed army of patient and loyal volunteers, and we thought that it was about time that we rolled out some training for these important people. This first day is open to all this community and several topic will be covered in this first of two days.
April 5 – Catholic Swing Dancing Evening
This looks like tremendous fun for our young adult population – and led by our friends Swing Patrol, who are resident at St Aloysius Parish Hall. What a great way to let off some steam after work, a stint of dancing and some food laid on too!
April 16 – Youth Worker Training Day (2)
Following on from the first training day on 12 March, we bring a new set of important topics to the day. These training days will bring that extra layer of confidence to the youth worker community and hopefully help them in their day to day activities.
As we move further into the year we’ll flag other events as they become better formed but we are certainly planning for a role within the Diocesan pilgrimage to Walsingham on 9 July, a repeat Music Ministry Day in the autumn of 2016 and a second Youth Mass in Advent 2016.
We cater for a broad range of youthful constituencies and if you have a suggestion please do get in contact with us!
