Girls and Women deserve better

Bruna talks about how girls and women deserve better than to be seen as tools or objects, and how they shouldn’t settle for anything less than the true, the good and the beautiful.

The other day, I was watching some music videos on TV and came across a video from a very popular American female rapper. I’d heard and seen comments on Facebook about the video but had never seen it. The song is basically about women’s bottoms and the video has a lot of women, including the singer, wearing pretty much nothing and shaking their bottom at the camera.

Let’s be realistic; this isn’t empowering or liberating women – it’s degrading and objectifying them.

At the time, I was shocked by the content of the video, but I realized that I shouldn’t be; this is where the entertainment industry is right now. In the desperate pursuit of money, affirmation and public recognition, young women of my generation are reduced to tools.

This is what young people are being exposed to and, at an age when you are developing your character and personality, your beliefs are also being formed. As is evident in this music video, it sends the message that a girl should act as an insatiable slut, desperate for sexual pleasure and male approval. It tells men to seek this behaviour in women; and, if the woman doesn’t deliver on this fantasy, she is often left rejected and broken-hearted. Girls and women deserve better than this.

But the reason for talking about the music video is this: that whilst all this mediocre entertainment is out there, you don’t need to watch it! You don’t need to participate in the problem.

We need to have good judgement to see what is truly best for us; for that which genuinely gives meaning to our lives; that which moves us towards a holy, self-giving and beautiful life.

I’m not saying that you shouldn’t watch TV or listen to music. We are part of this world and we can’t enclose ourselves in a bubble. But we need to have good judgement to see what is truly best for us; for that which genuinely gives meaning to our lives; that which moves us towards a holy, self-giving and beautiful life.

This call to holiness, which each of us is endowed with, is definitely not an easy task in this crazy culture; you need all the help you can get. Of course, God is always there to give you the strength that you need to overcome sin and fight temptation, but we are humans and we have an inclination to sin. And being surrounded by things that pressure you to be the complete opposite are not going to help you stay focused and progress.

God calls us to this great adventure on Earth – to live in awesome holiness. And if we surround ourselves with the true, the good and the beautiful, we can achieve our calling and be as beacons of hope, shining God’s love throughout this world.

So say “NO!” to the mediocre, and “YES!” to God’s life-affirming call to holiness for each of us. You’ll be so much better off for it – both in this life and the next.
